(The Post News)- A devastating fire swept through Effingham Informal Settlement in eThekwini, Durban, destroying at least 22 homes and claiming the life of a 29-year-old individual who was burnt beyond recognition. The victim, originally from Port St. Johns, Eastern Cape, has not been officially named as Ayanda Ziqethu.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma extended deepest condolences to the family of the victim, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim of the fire that broke out in Effingham Informal Settlements last night.” A team from his office has been sent to meet with the family and express condolences.
The MEC is working closely with Provincial Commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to ensure that forensic teams are deployed to remove the remains of the victim. eThekwini Mayor Cllr Cyril Xaba has also sent his condolences to the affected family.
According to preliminary reports, the fire has resulted in the displacement of 21 to 28 individual family members. MEC Duma emphasized that the cause of the fire is currently unknown and that a report from the eThekwini Mayor is awaited.
