(The Post News)– President Donald Trump has ordered a formal investigation into what he called the “unprecedented and potentially unethical use” of celebrity endorsements by Senator Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential campaign.
The move has stirred political tensions, with critics accusing the administration of weaponising federal agencies for political gain, while supporters argue the investigation is necessary for ensuring election transparency.
Trump remarked that they deserve to “know who is really influencing” their elections. He further pointed out that Harris has always been encircled by “Hollywood elites”, and the American people deserve to know whether any regulations were breached.
The investigation, led by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in conjunction with the Department of Justice, will examine whether Harris’ campaign violated campaign finance laws through its collaboration with high-profile entertainers and media figures.
Notable celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé, and John Legend publicly voiced their support for Harris during her run for vice president, with some even partaking in fundraising events and digital campaigns.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended the president’s decision, stating that Trump’s investigation is about legitimacy. According to McEnany, they need to guarantee that campaign endorsements adhere to FEC standards, particularly if there are large platforms and financial resources involved.
Democrats have denounced the investigation as politically motivated. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called the probe “a blatant abuse of power aimed at silencing Black voices and undermining a historic campaign.” Warren claimed that Trump’s administration sees Harris’ influence and popularity as a threat, adding that this is merely a diversion from the actual problems that Americans face.
Kamala Harris’ office responded in a brief statement, calling the investigation “baseless and politically timed”. According to the statement, they are pleased with the wide range of people who joined us, from common citizens to well-known public leaders. The statement further assured that all rules and regulations were followed in their campaign, and they remain committed to the task at hand.
Legal experts are divided on the merits of the investigation. Professor Laura Jennings, a political law scholar at Georgetown University, said, “Celebrity endorsements are not inherently illegal. The real question is whether there was any coordination that violates the rules around campaign contributions or disclosures.”
