(The Post News)- Two people have died in Diepkloof protest, after one having been ran down by a truck transporting tinned fish.
It is reported that the driver of the truck was tying to avoid looting from the angry residents and he accelerated his truck through crowds of people and ended up injuring multiple people killing one person. The driver collided with an electric pole, causing blackout for some parts of Diepkloof.
Speaking to IOL News, Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed two deaths, he said ” A male and female were run over. The man died at the scene, and the woman was seriously injured and transported to the hospital,”
“Residents from Diepkloof hostel had closed the Diepkloof interchange. While they were there, one person was knocked down by a vehicle and later declared dead on arrival at the hospital.” Masondo said
Residents from Diepkloof hostel were protesting over housing issues, they barricaded the Diepkloof interchange with burning tyres, rocks and debris, forcing motorists to look for alternative routes.
However the Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla has confirmed that the roads have now been reopened and protesters dispersed, but delays are expected to continue on the N12 westbound due to the earlier incidents.
Gauteng police have confirmed that the driver is cooperating with police investigations, speaking to EWN reporter Mavela said ” So we are going to obtain a statement from him. Because he’s the one that hit people. So, it’s good that we are having him and he’s cooperating to tell us what transpired.”
No arrested have been made, but the police have opened a case of public violence and investigations are continuing.
