(The Post News)- Authorities have launched a full investigation into a devastating fire that claimed the lives of four children in a residential building in Mayfair early Sunday morning. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 2:00 AM, where firefighters battled the raging blaze for more than two hours. Despite their efforts, four children — aged between 4 and 13 — were tragically found dead in one of the upstairs rooms.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We have opened an inquest docket and are currently working with fire investigators to determine the exact cause of the fire,” said Masondo. “At this stage, foul play has not been ruled out.”
Neighbours reported hearing screams before seeing thick smoke billowing from the double-storey building. “It was horrifying,” said local resident Amina Dube. “We heard the children crying for help, but the fire spread too fast. We couldn’t get inside — it was too hot. I’ve never felt so helpless.” Another resident, Elias Motsepe, who lives across the street, said the community is in shock. “These were good kids from a hard-working family. Everyone in the neighbourhood is grieving. We want answers.”
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Nana Radebe confirmed that the fire had engulfed a large portion of the building by the time crews arrived. “When our teams arrived, the structure was already compromised by flames. We managed to contain the fire before it spread to adjacent homes,” said Radebe. “Unfortunately, the victims were found in a back room, which appears to have had limited ventilation and possibly no escape route.” Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have started in the kitchen, but officials say investigations are ongoing. The building’s safety compliance and emergency exit accessibility will also be examined.
Counsellors have been dispatched to support the grieving family and community members. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed his condolences in a statement: “This is a heartbreaking tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and the entire Mayfair community. We trust the investigation will provide clarity and accountability.” Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact local authorities.
