(The Post News)- A well-known thirty-four-year-old Limpopo personality has been taken into custody for subjecting his six-year-old niece to sexual violence. To protect the identity of the minor, police have withheld the names from the public.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the provincial police spokesperson, reports that the disturbing event took place on the 12th of May, in the little girl’s home in Mpheni. The child’s grandmother, who is believed to have been watching her at the time, called the mother from work in Pretoria and told her the little girl ‘was unwell’.
Once the little girl’s mother got home, she was told that the child had been rushed to the hospital, where an examination revealed the occurrence of sexual assault. When the little girl was questioned about the events, she revealed that her uncle had exposed her to material that was ‘inappropriate’ before forcing himself on her.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, conveyed serious distress over the incident, stating how ‘disturbing’ it is when the very people who are meant to protect children end up being the same people who ‘violate them’. He goes further to describe it as ‘betrayal of trust’ when it is people within the family who commit these heinous acts.
The suspect has since then been detained by Waterval detectives. Legal hearings were postponed to the 27th of May when the suspect appeared before the magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
