(The Post News)- Max Verstappen says this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix could be unpredictable due to a new rule that forces drivers to make two pit stops instead of the usual one. The rule was introduced to make the race more exciting, as Monaco is known for being difficult to overtake on its tight, narrow streets.
“It could go either way, very calm or completely chaotic,” Verstappen said. He explained that safety cars and pit strategy will now play a bigger role. In past races, once drivers made a single tyre change, the race was pretty straightforward. Now, teams will need to be clever with timing their two stops, possibly taking risks.
Verstappen has won twice in Monaco, but finished sixth last year. Despite winning last week’s Emilia Romagna GP, he admits Red Bull’s car isn’t built for slow-speed, twisty tracks like Monaco.
Qualifying on Saturday remains crucial. Because overtaking is so tough during the race, starting near the front is key. Alpine driver Pierre Gasly agrees, saying teams will have to be sharp with their strategies but qualifying still does most of the job.
