(The Post New)- Napoli clinched the Serie A title in the 2024-25 season, securing their fourth Scudetto in club history. Manager Antonio Conte has saved Napoli from a potential calamity and brought them back to the top of Serie A. Despite a successful season, his future at the Scudetto winners remains uncertain.
By leading Napoli to their fourth Scudetto and second in three seasons, the 55-year-old has surpassed preseason expectations and strengthened his reputation as a regular winner. However, after only one season in charge, his tense relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has simmered throughout the season, and he might be leaving in the summer.
During the pivotal closing weeks of the title race, Conte publicly expressed his displeasure with certain aspects of Napoli’s management under De Laurentiis. He has also implied that he may leave Napoli if they fail to meet his expectations in the summer, as the team faces a more challenging season with Champions League play in the upcoming season.
When asked about his future last month, Conte responded, “I’m open to anything, but we need to see where we are.” The stars of Napoli’s victory, Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, were seeking a way out when Conte arrived last summer, as Napoli was reeling after the worst Serie A championship defense in history.
With the arrival of Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively, in August, Conte swiftly shaped Napoli in his image. Conte had already been frustrated by the lack of reinforcements in the first few weeks of his job, despite Napoli having played two league games.
“Working for fans who emotionally support me makes me happy in Naples. That’s crucial,” Conte said. “However, you are aware that I bring expectations with me to whatever job I accept. When they hire me, they assume that getting to Europe isn’t enough and that you must compete for the crown, even if you placed tenth the year before.”
Conte has previously criticized a club for being frugal, and this time may not be different. In the summer of 2014, Conte left Juventus after winning three straight Serie A titles, citing a lack of financial resources as a reason for his departure. De Laurentiis, who took over Napoli in 2004, has transformed the club into one of Italy’s best, despite his controversial behavior.
If Conte stays, he’ll need to demonstrate his ability to manage the demanding schedule that Inter Milan, the reigning champions, have endured this season. Conte’s team has benefited from Inter’s 17-game advantage over Napoli this season, which won’t be available next season. Write caption for this article
