(The Post News)- Mamelodi Sundowns was denied a late draw against Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids at Loftus Stadium on Saturday, depriving them of an advantage in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final. Lucas Ribeiro’s incredible goal in the 54th minute gave the Brazilians the lead, but Pyramids’ header in the final seconds of play gave them an equalizer.
With both teams generating scoring opportunities, the game was fiercely contested. In the ninth minute, Iqraam Rayners put Pyramids’ custodian Ahmed Elshenawi to the test as Sundowns got off to a fast start.
But the visitors steadily picked up speed, and Ibrahim Mohamed and Fiston Mayele used their excellent combination to put Sundowns’ defence in jeopardy. Until Ribeiro’s goal in the 54th minute, Sundowns were unable to take advantage of their opportunities despite their best efforts. But Pyramids persisted, and in the final minute of play, they significantly equalised.
With the draw, the two clubs will play an exciting second leg match on June 1st in Egypt’s 30 June Stadium. Pyramids are vying for their first CAF Champions League championship, however.
Both clubs are intent on winning, thus the second leg should be a fierce and exciting match. Will Pyramids’ resolve be crushed by Sundowns’ Brazilian flair, or will the Egyptian team commit a shocking upset? The scenario is set for this decisive tie to end in a thrilling way.
