Lesotho Highlands Water Project
(The Post News)- The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) has officially resumed operations. This follows a seven-month shutdown for critical maintenance. There were also upgrades. The 38-kilometre Ash River Tunnel, which transports water from Lesotho to South Africa’s Free State province, was reopened on Sunday. This event marks a significant step in bolstering regional water security.
The shutdown, initiated in October 2024, was essential for conducting inspections and enhancements within the tunnel and associated infrastructure. Delays were encountered due to incomplete work on the Lesotho side and adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall .
Despite concerns over potential water shortages during the maintenance period, South Africa managed to maintain adequate water supply levels. Percy Sechemane, CEO of the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), attributed this success to proactive measures. He stated, “We had, as South Africa, pre-empted the risk that we needed to mitigate. We ensured we pump enough water into those storage dams” .
The LHWP is a collaborative initiative between Lesotho and South Africa. It is designed to supply water to South Africa’s Gauteng region. It also generates hydroelectric power for Lesotho. The project includes a network of dams, tunnels, and hydropower stations. The Katse and Mohale Dams, along with the Muela Hydropower Station, are part of this network.
Looking ahead, Phase II of the LHWP is underway. It features the construction of the Polihali Dam. There is also a 38-kilometre transfer tunnel connecting to the Katse Dam. Upon completion, this phase is expected to increase the annual water transfer to South Africa to over 1.27 billion cubic metres, enhancing water availability in the Vaal River System .
The resumption of the LHWP operations signifies a pivotal advancement in securing water resources for both nations. It underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing regional water challenges. Write headline and caption
