Shivambu slams Ramaphosa’s White House visit, calls for a shift from Western alliances to African unity.
(The Post News)– In a pointed Africa Day message, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member Floyd Shivambu criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent engagement with the United States, following the president’s visit to the White House.
Shivambu expressed concern that Ramaphosa’s diplomatic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump signals a continued alignment with Western powers at the expense of Africa’s sovereignty. He accused the presidency of prioritising foreign approval over the needs and aspirations of African nations.
The remarks come after Ramaphosa met with Trump at the White House, a move seen by some critics as a strategic partnership and by others as a sign of South Africa leaning too closely toward Western interests.
Shivambu emphasised the importance of South-South cooperation and renewed calls for stronger ties within the BRICS+ bloc, stressing the need for Africa to determine its own path free from Western influence.
Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) and serves as a reminder of the continent’s shared struggles and future ambitions.
