(The Post News)– Hoërskool Duineveld in Upington is set to buzz with excitement this weekend as it plays host to the Northern Cape DSTV Schools Netball Challenge (DSNC) provincial finals. Twelve schools from five districts will battle it out for four coveted spots to represent the province at the national finals.
The top four teams will head to Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen in Boksburg, Johannesburg, where the fifth annual DSNC national finals will take place from 27 July. As one of South Africa’s leading school-level netball competitions, the DSNC provides players from both urban and rural schools with equal access to high-level exposure and development.
Despite some teams withdrawing due to financial constraints, Northern Cape Schools Netball chairperson Mary Bezuidenhout is anticipating an exciting and competitive weekend. While expressing disappointment over the absence of certain Ubuntu schools, she emphasised the importance of healthy district competition and celebrating those who are able to participate.
One shining example of the value of school netball is Spar Proteas defender, Sanmarie Visser, a Hoërskool Duineveld alumna currently playing for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia’s Suncorp Super League. Though she missed the first DSNC due to Covid-19, Visser credits school competitions as essential building blocks for young players, helping them grow in confidence and gain valuable exposure.
Bezuidenhout expressed immense pride in Visser’s achievements, describing her as an inspiration, especially for young talent in the Upington community.
