South Africa’s senior women’s football team began their 2025 #ThreeNations Series on a winning note, defeating Botswana 3–2 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday afternoon.
Banyana Banyana took early control of the match, with Adrielle Mibe opening the scoring in the 13th minute, her first-ever goal for the national team. Jermaine Seoposenwe added two more goals before the break, scoring in the 16th and 36th minutes to put South Africa 3–0 ahead.
Botswana responded with determination. Lesego Radiakanyo found the net just before half-time, and Laone Moloi’s goal midway through the second half tightened the contest, but Banyana held on for the win.
Mibe expressed excitement about scoring her first goal, saying it felt like the first of many to come and boosted her confidence.
Coach Desiree Ellis praised the fast-paced first half but admitted the team lost momentum in the second. She pointed to unnecessary mistakes and urged her players to be more composed and efficient in possession moving forward.
Botswana coach Alex Malete reflected on missed opportunities, noting that his team struggled to execute their intended tactics under pressure. He said the next match against Zambia would feature a new approach.
The series continues on May 31 with Botswana taking on Zambia, followed by South Africa facing Zambia on June 3. Both matches kick off at 3 pm at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Tickets are available from Ticketpro at R40 for adults and R20 for children.
