((The Post News)– A village-burying landslide in southern Switzerland has created a flood risk, prompting warnings of potential further evacuations.
A massive landslide swept through the village of Blatten, flooding homes after millions of cubic metres of debris poured down the mountain. The village’s 300 residents had been evacuated in May due to concerns about the mountain’s stability behind the Birch Glacier.
Authorities warned residents in nearby villages to prepare for potential evacuation due to the growing flood risk. The army is ready to provide support with equipment and resources once conditions permit.
Search efforts for a missing 64-year-old man were suspended due to unstable debris and rockfall risks. The disaster’s impact has been overwhelming for residents, with scientists linking the event to climate change.
