A massive landslide swept through the village of Blatten, flooding homes after millions of cubic metres of debris poured down the mountain. The village’s 300 residents had been evacuated in May due to concerns about the mountain’s stability behind the Birch Glacier.

The debris dammed the River Lonza, creating a lake and increasing flood risk, which could lead to further evacuations if the blockage fails.
