(The Post News)- A runner died at the Slave Route Challenge 2025, a long-awaited race that took a tragic turn when a tree fell on a female participant. She was one of about 8,000 runners taking part in the event on Sunday.
According to Zarina Meyer Brewer, race director, the incident occurred when a tree unexpectedly fell in the Company Garden area, striking a runner. Emergency services responded swiftly and transported the runner to the hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.
The event organizers emphasized the importance of participant safety, stating that the safety and well-being of all runners are their top priority. “All safety and security protocols were observed and implemented ahead of the event in close collaboration with the City of Cape Town and emergency services,” they said. “This was a tragic and unforeseeable accident, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding it.”
The organizers extended their heartfelt condolences to the runner’s family, friends, and loved ones, saying, “On behalf of the Slave Route Challenge organizing committee, we extend our deepest condolences to the runner’s family, friends, and loved ones. This is a devastating loss, and we are holding her family in our thoughts during this difficult time. The Slave Route Challenge is an event rooted in history, community, and resilience, and today, we carry the memory of one of our own with us. We mourn her loss together as a community.”
Out of respect, the organizers will not release any further details regarding the incident and have asked for privacy for the family while they mourn their loved one.
