(The Post News)- Pyramids FC of Egypt has secured its first-ever CAF Champions League title, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa with a 3-2 aggregate score. The second leg, held on June 1, 2025, at the Cairo 30 June Stadium in Egypt (though the venue mentioned seems inconsistent with typical expectations for a second leg in a different country, it is assumed the game took place as scheduled), ended 2-1 in favor of Pyramids, following a 1-1 draw in Pretoria.
Fiston Mayele opened the scoring for Pyramids in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Ahmed Samy doubled the lead with a header from a free kick in the 56th minute. Mamelodi Sundowns’ Iqraam Rayners pulled one back, but Pyramids held on to clinch the historic victory.
Pyramids reached the final after a dramatic 3-2 win over Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals. Despite trailing twice, goals from Mostafa Fathy, Ramadan Sobhi, and a decisive brace from Fiston Mayele secured their spot in the final.
The club showed resilience and consistent attacking play with a 4-4-2 formation, leaving Sundowns no choice but to endure a beating. Pyramids won ball possession at 65% to 35%, with total shots tied at 10, and a tie of four shots on target and off-target. Despite winning the basics, Pyramids converted half of their shots on target to goals. However, Sundowns managed to convert only one.
The football fraternity congratulated Pyramids on the success of their current CAF Champions League campaign. One X (Twitter) user, Thabo Morwatshehla, posted, “Someone once said, a team that will beat Orlando Pirates will win the CAF Champions League.” A Pirates fan replied, “They must feel the pain we felt when Pyramids hammered us,” replied Jimmy Sii.
This triumph marks a significant milestone for Pyramids FC, making them the fourth Egyptian club to win the prestigious title, joining Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily. This achievement is especially notable for a club that was started in 2018, rebranded from a club named Al Assiouty Sport when Saudi sports chief Turki Al-Sheikh purchased the club.
