(The Post News)– The South African Police Service (SAPS) have arrested two government officials, who are allegedly connected with a case of kidnapping and extortion. One official is a Gauteng Police officer arrested in Johannesburg, and the other works for the Department of Home Affairs and was arrested in Tshwane.
As investigations are still ongoing, the details leading to the arrests have not been disclosed, and the suspects remain unnamed. However, reports have noted that the Home Affairs official was taken into custody from the Department of Home Affairs’ Pretoria headquarters.
Additionally, the police have stressed that they are setting an example by ensuring that anyone suspected of committing a crime involving authority is held accountable.
Meanwhile, citizens have expressed disappointment in state officials who abuse their authority by committing crime. While some have noted that “government officials are not vetted enough”—describing them as” “thugs”—others feel that using their power in criminal activities, which they labelled as “side hustles”.
