(The Post News)– A family in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal, has asked for public assistance following the death of their grandfather, Vijendra “Parra” Govender on May 28. Govender died at the hospital afer being knocked over twice by two different cars.
Govender, who was in his 60s, was allegedly standing on the side of the road, on Florence Nightingale Drive, about to cross the street when the first vehicle knocked him over.
Kubashnee Moothoo, Govender’s daughter, reported that she was told that the first vehicle stopped and the driver stepped out to assist her father to get him to the hospital. As the driver waited with Govender for the ambulance, another vehicle drove past them, knocking Govender for the second time. The second driver did not stop to check if Govender was okay. In fact, it is reported that he was going at an “imaginable speed”
Moothoo said that her father had scheduled a day off from work to take his wife, her mother, to the hospital on the morning of the incident. As time passed, Govender did not return home, and out of worry, his wife called and found out that he had been rushed to the hospital.
When they arrived at the hospital, they found Govender in a critical condition as he had endured extensive physical trauma, which included head injuries, fractured leg and pelvis, as well as a punctured lung. According to Moothoo, her father was in so much pain that he could barely speak.
The next morning, Govender was taken into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as his condition had gotten worse, and in the wee hours of the 28th of May, his family received a “devastating call” from the hospital notifying them that he had passed away.
Govender was known by the community as a ‘loving’ person who adored his family. He was also a businessman who sold offal and was the breadwinner in his home. He leaves behind his wife, 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and his 102-year-old grandmother, who was only told the day of the funeral about the passing of her son.
The family has urged anyone who may have information about the second vehicle to please contact the SAPS in Chatsworth.
