(The Post News)– Presley Chweneyagae’s memorial service took place on Thursday, June 5, at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
Sbongiseni Mkhize opened the memorial service with heartfelt words, reflecting on the first time he met Presley back in 2005. Presley was just 20 years old then, performing in a production at the State Theater, which later moved to the Market Theater. Mkhize fondly remembered those early days of Presley’s journey in the arts. “I think we can all agree that we were enriched by his talent and by having him around us,” said Mkhize.
Thandeka Dlamini, speaking on behalf of the Kirk family, lovingly shared a speech from them. Dlamini said that they were gathered to “celebrate a life lived to the fullest”. Additionally, Dlamini said Chweneyagae was an example of artistic excellence to the African continent. According to her, Chweneyagae’s achievements and talents “shine brightly for all of us to see”.
Meanwhile, Gavin Hood, the director of Tsotsi, described Chweneyagae as someone who possesses “ego-free instinct for raw emotional honesty”, noting that his talent was “raw, humble and truthful”.
Terry Pheto also spoke highly about Chweneyagae, both as a friend and a colleague; she said Presley was a big part of her life. “Robala ka khotso”—translating to rest in peace”—”you broke my heart,” said Pheto.
Among those who spoke at the memorial were actors Israel Matseke and Sdumo Mtshali, who shared their memories of Presley. In a touching moment, Israel also sang Thuma Mina Baba, adding a heartfelt musical tribute to the service.
Sdumo Mtshali spoke about how he and Presley first worked together on the film iNumber Number and how they became close friends from that time. “He has a way to make you understand moments in each frame, and that was a Godly talent,” said Mtshali. He further offered comforting words to Presley’s son, encouraging him to stay strong and uphold the strength of the family, and asked the producers of Cobrizi to make another season in Presley’s memory.
As the country says goodbye to one of its most loved actors, Presley Chweneyagae is remembered not just for his talent but also for his kindness, humility, and deep love for the arts.
