(The Post News)- On Wednesday, the White House announced that President Donald Trump has officially signed a proclamation to suspend international student and exchange visas for new and future Harvard attendees.
The proclamation came as no shock, as Trump has had a difficult history with the university. Trump has frequently accused Harvard of fostering “anti-American sentiment” and most recently of being “rampantly antisemitic.” Just weeks before the proclamation, the Department of Homeland Security attempted to revoke Harvard’s certification to enroll international students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
This unprecedented move is just an escalation of the former president’s immigration and education agenda. This proclamation came the same day he issued a “travel ban” restricting and banning nationals from 19 countries – primarily located in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia- from entering the U.S.
In response, Harvard condemned the policy as “yet another illegal retaliatory step taken by the Administration in violation of Harvard’s First Amendment rights.” The Ivy league institution reiterated its commitment to protecting its international students, adding , “”Harvard will continue to protect its international students,”.
