(The Post News)– The Democratic Alliance (DA) has taken urgent action to rescue the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which they believe is broken, and to also “restore justice for victims of corruption”.
Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, DA Member of Parliament, said they are going to achieve this through presuming designed reform packages that include passing their “Scorpions 2.0”. The bill seeks to create an independent Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) that will have the power to investigate and prosecute high-level corruption, free from political interference.
Breytenbach said they will amend the Constitution to ensure the head of the NPA is appointed by Parliament, not the President, making sure that transparent processes are followed.
The MP further stressed the need to launch a watching brief programme that will monitor high-stakes prosecutions and improve outcomes, citing that their party has done it successfully in the Western Cape.
Moreover, Breytenbach added that they plan to also introduce a subcommittee that will be dedicated to overseeing and keeping the NPA accountable, highlighting a demand for a performance audit of the NPA by the Auditor-General or Public Service Commission.
The advocate further stated their commitment to fight for better funding, smarter recruitment, and stronger retention of experienced prosecutors, also piloting a student legal support programme that will assist with court administration and fast-track young people into the justice system.
“If you’ve lost faith in the justice system, we are fighting to build a system that works – one that delivers convictions, not excuses. If you’re tired of delays and dropped cases, we’re demanding proper budgets, better staff, and public reporting to hold the NPA accountable,” Breytenbach stated.
Breytenbach shared what she described as the NPA’s failures to successfully prosecute politically connected figures implicated in state capture.
“In the high-profile state capture matter involving Ace Magashule’s former PA, Moroadi Cholota, the NPA bungled the extradition request by using the wrong authority – a mistake that now risks derailing accountability in yet another major case,” she added.
Breytenbach firmly maintained that they bring by encouraging the Parliament to support their reforms instead of “protecting the status quo where the corrupt rule with impunity”.
