(The Post News)- The white house has confirmed on Saturday night that US President Donald Trump has deployed 2 000 guards to restore order in Los Angels following an immigration protest.
On Friday 6 May protestors clashed with the immigration authorities in Los Angels after federal agents arrested tens of people in various locations. These arrests are part of a broader effort by Trump to crack down on immigration, which has led to many raids and deportations across the US.
According to Fox News, on Saturday 7 May the law enforcement used tear gas in Paramount, California, near a Home Depot location where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were reportedly carrying out a raid.
In a statement released by the White House, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says these operations are crucial to stopping illegal activity and reversing the flow of unauthorised individuals into the US. She says California’s Democratic leaders have failed to protect their citizens from this issue.
Meanwhile, Governor of California Gavin Newsom considered the deployment of troops as “purposefully inflammatory”; he says this deployment will intensify the tensions. Newsom says the approach to restoring order in Los Angeles is misguided and risks undermining the public’s confidence. He further stated that the federal government deployed 2,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles not to address a law enforcement need but to create a show of force.
Nonetheless, officials from the Trump administration say the protestors are “lawless rioters”. However, the Los Angeles Police Department reported that Saturday’s protests in the city were peaceful and ended without any issues.
Although the Police Department considered the protest to be peaceful, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department says in Paramount, a group of protesters became violent, throwing objects at federal agents and sheriff’s deputies, prompting the LA Sheriff’s Department to call in extra resources and deploy more deputies.US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth took to social media X to respond to the protest. He announced the immediate mobilisation of national guard troops and warned that active-duty Marines would be deployed if the unrest persists.
