(The Post News)– Sarah Snook won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, a one-woman show where she plays 26 characters. She thanked her husband for his support during her acceptance speech.
This production marks Snook’s Broadway debut, following her successful run in London’s West End, where she won an Olivier Award. She took over the role from Erin-Jean Norvill, who first performed it in Australia.
Snook described the play as exploring themes of identity and vulnerability. A New York Times critic had predicted her win, praising her performance weeks before the awards.
The play, directed by Kip Williams, received widespread critical acclaim and six Tony nominations. While it won the costume design category, it didn’t take home awards in other categories.
Following the success of “Dorian Gray”, Williams will stage “Dracula” on Broadway with Cynthia Erivo. The play has broken box office records, grossing over $1 million per week, and will run until June 29.
