(The Post News)- The South African film and television industry bid a final farewell to renowned actor Presley Chweneyagae, who was laid to rest at the Zandfontein Cemetery in Pretoria on June 8, 2024. Chweneyagae, 40, passed away at his home on May 27 due to natural causes following sudden respiratory complications.
During the funeral service at the Akasia Hall, Chweneyagae’s eldest son, Siyabulela, delivered a heartfelt tribute to his father. He described him as a funny, charismatic, and present dad who always made time for his family despite his busy schedule. Siyabulela fondly remembered their boys’ trips, dinner dates, and music sessions, showcasing the strong bond they shared.
Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, paid tribute to Chweneyagae’s remarkable contributions to the industry. She described him as a towering figure who left an indelible mark through his passion and commitment to his craft. Mabe praised Chweneyagae’s storytelling, which gave audiences a chance to see themselves represented through his lens.
The funeral was attended by scores of mourners, including industry colleagues, government officials, and distinguished guests. Notably, Warren Masemola and cast members from “The River” were in attendance to honor the iconic actor. Other notable attendees included Dr. Jerry Mofokeng and Oros Mampofu, with actress Rami Chune presiding over the proceedings.
Chweneyagae’s impact on the South African film and television industry will be deeply felt. He rose to fame with his role in the Academy Award-winning film “Tsotsi” and went on to captivate audiences with his portrayal of Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena in “The River” and his role in the Nelson Mandela biopic “Long Walk to Freedom.” His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of actors and artists.
