(The Post News)– South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane and Japan’s Yui Kamiji added another trophy to their growing Grand Slam collection on Friday night, clinching their fourth major title together by winning the Roland Garros women’s doubles crown.
The duo had to fight hard for it. Facing China’s Xiaohui Li and Ziying Wang in the final, Montjane and Kamiji were pushed to the limit, dropping the first set before rallying to a 4-6, 7-5, [10-7] victory. With this win, they reclaimed the Roland Garros title they first lifted in 2023, continuing a partnership that has now brought them titles at the US Open and Wimbledon as well.
While Friday brought celebration for Montjane in doubles, it also came with disappointment in singles. The South African fell in straight sets (4-6, 4-6) to second seed Aniek van Koot in the semi-finals. Van Koot, a seasoned three-time champion, now advances to face Kamiji in the women’s singles final, guaranteeing an emotional clash between doubles partners.
On the men’s side, it wasn’t to be for South Africa’s Donald Ramphadi and his Turkish partner Ahmet Kaplan in the quad doubles final. The pair lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to Israel’s Guy Sasson and Dutch star Niels Vink. Still, Montjane’s determination and grit continue to shine on clay, cementing her place among the elite in international wheelchair tennis.
