(The Post News)– UEFA confirmed the death of a spectator during Sunday night’s UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain. The fan died after falling approximately eight metres from the second tier of the main stand at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
UEFA has released a statement, sending sentiments to the family of the deceased and noting that “despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET).’
Emergency personnel, stewards, and police immediately responded to the scene, but despite efforts to stabilise them, the fan succumbed to their injuries before they could be transported to a hospital.
According to ESPN, the match continued while emergency personnel responded, with most players and spectators unaware of the severity of the incident. It wasn’t until after Portugal’s 5–3 win in the penalty shootout that the tragic nature of the situation became widely known.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente opened by addressing the loss. Fuente expressed condolences to the family of the fan, noting that the incident has made them realise the important things in life.
Portugal’s coach Roberto Martínez echoed the sentiment, calling it “extremely sad news”, while Portuguese defender Nuno Mendes also conveyed his condolences to the family and said that the incident “cast a pall” on their win. Officials have yet to confirm whether the incident was accidental or involved structural or behavioral concerns.
