(The Post News)– Doechii was crowned the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist of the Year at the 2025 BET Awards ceremony. The rapper used her award acceptance speech to call out President Donald Trump’s administration for what she described as “ruthless attacks” on Latino immigrants and using unauthorised military forces on protestors.
On June 6, the police raided Latino immigrants in Los Angeles (LA) and arrested over 150 individuals, prompting protests from LA residents. Meanwhile, on June 8, the raid, which was part of Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), escalated, causing tensions between LA law enforcement and residents.
According to reports, protestors blocked off major highways entering the city and set cars on fire in response to Trump’s National Guard deployment orders.
Trump then took it upon himself to deploy military troops, who shot rubber bullets, flash bangs, and tear gas at protestors, without informing Governor Gavin Newsom. As a result of his unauthorised federalisation of the National Guard, which Newsom calls “illegal and immoral,” Trump’s administration faces a lawsuit. It appears that Newsom is not the only one who is unimpressed with Trump’s violent acts on immigrants.
Doechii took to the BET Awards stage to voice out her concerns and criticise the presidential administration. In her speech, the Grammy Award winner conveyed gratitude to her fans and the BET organization for honouring her with her “first BET accolade.” Doechii then saw it fit to use the platform and address Trump’s violent attacks that have caused “fear and chaos” in and out of the city of LA.
She claimed that Trump is using the guise of “law and order” to illegally deploy military forces to people protesting for their rights and “tear” immigrants from their families. Doechii questioned the kind of government being run by Trump.
The Swamp Princess concluded her address by stating that she felt obligated to utilise her platform to advocate for “all oppressed people”—including Black, trans, and Palestinian people. Additionally, she urged that everyone “stand together” and fight.
