(The Post News)- A passenger plane heading to London crashed on Thursday in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad with 242 people on board. Aviation officials confirmed the incident, which the airline described as a “tragic accident.”
The Member of Parliament for Tottenham and UK Foreign Secretary expressed his sorrow in a post on X, following the plane crash in Ahmedabad, India. He shared that his thoughts are with those affected and noted that the UK is cooperating with Indian authorities to quickly gather information and offer support.
India’s civil aviation authority confirmed that 242 people were on board the aircraft, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members.
In a statement, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences to the passengers and their families, describing this as a deeply distressing time for everyone affected.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation reported that the plane sent a mayday call and crashed shortly after taking off, just outside the airport area.
Ahmedabad, the largest city in India’s Gujarat state, has about eight million residents, and its busy airport is close to crowded neighborhoods.
Rescue teams have been quickly deployed, and every effort is underway to provide medical help and support at the crash site. The airport has been temporarily closed, with all flights halted until further updates, according to the airport authorities.
India has experienced several tragic air accidents over the years. In 1996, a mid-air collision between two jets near New Delhi resulted in the loss of nearly 350 lives.
Another major accident occurred in 2010, when an Air India Express flight crashed and caught fire at Mangalore airport in the southwest, leading to the deaths of 158 out of 166 people on board.
