(The Post News)- A man in his 50s is reported to have fatally shot his 70-year-old mother in the head and then turned around to pull the trigger on himself after they got into a heated argument in their home in Bellair, Durban, on the 11th of June.
According to the spokesperson for the Amawele Emergency Services, Claude Subramodey, the woman’s husband and the suspect’s father, who is also in his 70s, stepped outside the home when the mother and son started arguing. As he moved the vehicles, he heard two gunshots ring from inside the home sometime around 19:30. The man then ran inside the house, came across his wife’s unresponsive body in the dining room, and quickly called the emergency services.
Upon their arrival at the Sarnia Road home, responders found the man so shocked and hysterical that he had to be treated. When they entered the house, they discovered the woman with a close-range gunshot wound on the right side of her head. They then found the son in the bedroom with a gunshot wound that entered from “under his chin” and went through the top of his head.

No further developments have been made by the police. However, the tragedy has left both the family and the community devastated and shocked, as a similar incident occurred just outside of Durban, in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday, where a relative was reported to have stabbed his blind grandmother. Luckily, the grandmother survived, but she is in critical condition at the hospital. The suspect was arrested on the 11th of June and is scheduled to stand in court on the 13th on charges of murder and attempted murder.
