(The Post News)– Mitchell Starc, an Australian speedster, has cemented his place in cricketing history by surpassing Mohammed Shami of India.
Starc was the most prolific wicket-taker during the 2025 International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy. He achieved a historic feat that solidified his place among the best white-ball bowlers in history.
After a dazzling stint that destroyed the opposition, Starc surpassed Shami’s record of 55 wickets in ICC events, reaching 56 wickets and counting. The milestone was attained in typical Starc manner, with his devastating swing, raw pace, and precision yorkers that have terrified batters for more than ten years.
Before Starc’s consistency over World Cups, Champions Trophies, and T20 World Cups moved him ahead, Shami, who had risen to the top of the list after his incredible performance in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, briefly held the record.
He won Player of the Tournament in the 2015 World Cup, was instrumental in planning Australia’s 2019 and 2023 campaigns, and now holds the record for most ICC wickets. His tournament records speak for themselves. The left-armer has taken wickets in four World Cups, several T20 World Cups, and Champions Trophy editions, setting a new record.
Starc has claimed 56 ICC tournament wickets overall in just 29 games, a remarkable strike rate that highlights his ability to win games. After the game, Starc played down the personal honour. Starc emphasized the importance of the team’s success, noting that even with good records, the goal is always team success. He added that his contributions are for the team.
Congratulatory messages from cricket lovers all over the world have poured in. Among those who congratulated Starc was Indian great Sachin Tendulkar, who tweeted, “Congratulations to Mitchell Starc on a phenomenal achievement.”
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting called Starc “a generational bowler” and claimed that he was the “real winner of the game” and that “records are meant to be broken.” He also remarked that because Starc is such a great bowler, he deserves every moment of this moment.
Australia appears set for another deep run in the Champions Trophy, with skipper Pat Cummins motivating the team and Starc heading the bowling unit. Australia’s rich ICC history has gained another chapter with Starc’s milestone, and it might not be the last.
Fans and commentators alike are left wondering how many more wickets Starc can add to his already impressive record as he continues to lead Australia’s bowling attack.
