UN calls for an urgent meeting following attack on Iran.
(The Post News)- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting on Friday, June 13, to address the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The meeting comes after Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran’s nuclear programs, including the Natanz enrichment site, using around 200 aircraft on Thursday night and Friday morning.
In response, Israel recalled past attacks, reminding ambassadors of Iran’s missile launches targeting civilians. Israel justified its attack, stating it was forced to act due to the “direct threat from Iran’s nuclear ambitions,” according to Danny Danon, Israel’s former ambassador to the UN.
Following the attack, Iran confirmed the deaths of senior officials, including Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, expressed disapproval of the attacks, stating that nuclear facilities should never be targeted, regardless of the context or circumstances, due to the potential harm to people and the environment.
The United States reportedly had prior knowledge of the attacks but denied any involvement in the plans to strike Iran. While the US accuses Iran of launching “unprovoked, direct proxy attacks” against Israel, Iran responded, saying that countries supporting Israel, particularly the US, share responsibility for the consequences.
The UN Secretary-General’s Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, urged Israel and Iran to “avoid at all costs a descent into deeper and wider regional conflict.” She emphasized that a peaceful resolution through negotiations remains the best means to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, warning against the enormous global consequences of a growing conflict.
