(The Post News)– The Proteas Women will be determined to level the series when they face the West Indies in the second ODI at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados on Saturday, 14 June.
South Africa suffered a four-wicket defeat via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the opening match of the three-game series, falling short both with the bat and ball. All-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who is set to become only the second South African woman to play 150 ODIs, reflected on the loss and her career ahead of the clash.
“We had a lot of starts, but no one went on to get a big score,” Kapp said. “In these conditions, you need one top-order batter to go through.”
Kapp also noted the team’s total was 30 to 40 runs short on a slow Caribbean pitch, making it difficult for the bowlers to defend. “Bowling has been a concern, but we also know we didn’t put enough runs on the board.”
Now 35, Kapp made her debut in 2009 and remains one of the sport’s most decorated players. She is just six games shy of surpassing Mignon du Preez’s all-time ODI appearance record for South Africa.
“I never thought I’d still be here 15–16 years later,” Kapp said. “But the hunger is still there. I go all in or not at all. I still want to perform at the highest level and hopefully help win a World Cup.”
Saturday’s ODI marks an opportunity for the Proteas to bounce back and celebrate a major milestone for a legend of the game.
