(The Post News)- Veteran actor Sello Maake KaNcube returns to the stage in the gripping revival of late Athol Fugard’s acclaimed play Master Harold… and the Boys, currently on stage at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton.
This powerful revival follows Fugard’s recent passing on 8 March 2025 at the age of 92. Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most celebrated playwrights, Fugard used theatre to expose the injustices of apartheid and explore its profound impact on human relationships.
Set in a 1950s teashop in South Africa, Master Harold… and the Boys follows the complex relationship between Hally, a white adolescent and the two Black waiters, Sam and Willie, who have long served as father figures to him. The apartheid era play, originally staged in 1982, explores how institutionalized racism can affect even the most intimate bonds.
Maake KaNcube applauds the continued relevance of play and describes it as a mirror into the South African society at that time. “Fugard essentially created a platform for reconciliation as far back as 1982,” he said. “To me, he was a visionary. He gave us something that said, ‘South Africa, let us look at ourselves.’”
Directed by Warona Seane, the revival stars Maake KaNcube alongside Daniel Anderson and Lebohang Motaung. The cast brings new life to a work that serves not only as a tribute to the country’s past and Fugard’s legacy, but also as June 16 nears, it is a timely reminder of the work that remains in healing our social divisions.
Master Harold… and the Boys runs until June 29, with varying showtimes. Tickets are available through the Theatre on the Square’s website.
