(The Post News)– A Sunday night altercation between two groups at a suburban carnival near Salt Lake City turned deadly, leaving three people dead, including an eight-month-old infant, according to local authorities. Two teenagers were also injured in the incident, which took place during the annual community event. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence.
Gunfire erupted at Centennial Park around 9:20 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, after police officers spotted a heated argument between two groups; the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire as police approached. Law enforcement officers promptly apprehended the gunman shortly after the shooting commenced. Although one officer discharged a firearm without striking the suspect, the 16-year-old male was successfully taken into custody, the department reported.
The injured teenagers, one male and one female, both sustained gunshot wounds to their arms. It remains unclear whether they were associated with the groups involved, the police added.
Detectives are actively interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation. “We believe there could be more people out there who witnessed the incident, and we would like to talk to them.” “If you witnessed this incident tonight, please contact us at 801-840-4000,” police stated on X.
This year, there have been 156 mass shootings in the United States, defined as incidents in which four or more individuals are shot or killed, excluding the shooter, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.
