(The Post News)– The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the provincial Department of Transport to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the tragic bus crash that occurred near Vryheid in the early hours of the morning. The incident resulted in 12 fatalities and injured more than 20 others.
The DA has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic bus crash near Vryheid. In a statement, Riona Gokool, MPL – DA KZN Spokesperson on Transport, said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we wish the survivors a swift and full recovery.”
“This tragedy serves as a clear reminder of the urgent need to strengthen road safety measures and ensure stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. It also underscores the importance of upgrading and maintaining road infrastructure across KwaZulu-Natal, especially in rural and regional areas where serious accidents occur far too frequently, he added, Gokool.
The DA further calls on MEC Siboniso Duma and his department to establish whether the crash was caused by negligence, such as poor road conditions, vehicle roadworthiness, or driver recklessness. Should this be the case, swift accountability and corrective measures must be implemented.
Gokool emphasized that road fatalities are far more than just numbers; they reflect lives lost, families devastated, and communities in mourning. As a member of KwaZulu-Natal’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), the DA remains committed to advocating for safer roads, stronger oversight of public transport, and greater investment in infrastructure to help prevent such tragedies. She added that ensuring the safety of citizens must remain a top priority.
