A senior Iranian general was killed overnight in an Israeli strike, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed Tuesday morning. The incident comes just days after the death of his predecessor, marking a continuation of Israel’s military campaign against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, now in its fifth day amid ongoing missile exchanges.
Israel began its campaign early on Friday, saying it was responding to a serious and immediate threat from Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
Explosions and air defense activity were reported in Tehran on Tuesday, as Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that major strikes on the Iranian capital were still to come.
On Monday night, an airstrike killed Maj. Gen. Ali Shadmani, who had just become the head of Iran’s military emergency command, Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters. He had only been in the role for about four days, taking over after Maj. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid was killed on Friday during Israel’s first attacks on Iran.
The IDF described Shadmani as Iran’s top military leader in practice, often referred to as the “war chief of staff,” and noted he was seen as the closest senior military official to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. According to the IDF, Shadmani oversaw both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian Armed Forces throughout the conflict.
At the site of a ballistic missile impact in central Israel on Tuesday afternoon, Defense Minister Israel Katz told reporters that the Israeli Air Force planned to carry out strikes later in the day against “major strategic targets, including key regime sites and infrastructure” in Tehran. He also mentioned that the IDF would provide evacuation warnings to people in the affected areas.
During a press conference on Tuesday, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin announced that Iranian forces who launched anti-aircraft missiles at an Israeli drone over Iran were killed in a strike on Sunday. Defrin explained that the drone spotted the soldiers getting ready to fire more missiles, leading to an attack on the launcher that resulted in their deaths.
