(The Post News)– President Trump has cut his G7 trip short after saying, “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” on Truth Social. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also attending the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, will be cutting his trip short, following President Trump’s early departure.
President Trump has called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, though U.S. officials confirm the United States will not take part in the Israeli offensive against Iran.
In Tehran, Iran’s capital, traffic has ground to a halt as residents attempt to flee the city. With fatigue setting in, one local voiced a growing concern: “How can 10 million people evacuate?”
Earlier on Monday, Israel announced it had targeted Iranian state media facilities in Tehran, with some of the strikes broadcast live on television. Meanwhile, earlier today, the G7 issued a joint statement urging a “de-escalation of hostilities” amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Iran’s health ministry reports that at least 224 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since Friday, while the death toll in Israel has risen to 24.
“I have to be back,” Trump said during a ceremonial photo op with the other world leaders present at the G7 summit on Monday. “You probably see what I see. And I have to be back as soon as I can,” he added, referencing the unfolding crisis.
Trump’s change of plans also follows a message he posted on his Truth Social platform, urging “everyone” in Iran to “evacuate”. Shortly after the post, videos claiming to show residents fleeing Tehran began circulating on social media. Before heading to the situation room Monday night, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told Fox News that the U.S. continues to maintain a defensive posture.
Pete Hegseth stated, “My job as the secretary of defense is to ensure that our people are safe and that we’re strong so that we can set the conditions for a deal. And President Trump’s made it clear it’s on the table. The question is whether Iran will take it.”
