(The Post News)– South Africa’s senior men’s cricket team, the Proteas, received a hero’s welcome following their historic World Test Championship victory, their first major ICC title in 27 years. The press conference, held shortly after their arrival, became more than just a celebration; it was a moment of national reflection and renewal.
Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie praised the team’s resilience and unity, applauding Cricket South Africa for weathering criticism and guiding the side to glory. He defended head coach Shukri Conrad’s leadership and named captain Temba Bavuma as the nation’s greatest cricket leader, even offering a public apology for previous doubts. McKenzie noted the team’s impact extended beyond cricket, reigniting national pride and proving what unity can achieve.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will honour the team with a Cabinet dinner, underscoring the significance of this achievement.
Captain Bavuma said this win marks the start of a new era. The team, he explained, wants to be remembered for laying the foundation of a winning culture in South African cricket. He described the public reception as overwhelming, adding that the gravity of their achievement only sank in upon returning home.
Coach Conrad highlighted the importance of Test cricket and dismantled the idea of a “Big Three” dominance: “We’re the champions now,” he said confidently. Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe called the victory a spark for the next generation, stressing that Test cricket will remain a national priority.
South Africa’s cricketing moment is here, and it’s just the beginning.
