Officials explained that trains can often seem to move slowly from a distance, which may lead to underestimations of their actual speed. In reality, trains travel much faster than they appear and are unable to stop quickly in emergency situations
Train services have since resumed, with operations back on their regular schedule. However, the incident stands as a strong reminder for all road users to stay alert when approaching level crossings, where warning signs and barriers are in place for safety.
Metrorail Western Cape is urging motorists to exercise heightened caution and to follow all safety signals without exception.
