Putin has offered to mediate talks between Iran and Israel and also warned against U.S. military intervention in the war.
(The Post News)– The Russian foreign ministry has warned the United States not to attack Iran amid fears that Washington will join Israel in the conflict.
The warning was issued by Moscow after President Vladimir Putin and the Chinese president Xi Jinping condemned Israeli attacks on Iran through a phone conversation. According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the two leaders advocated against Israel’s attacks on Iran, as they contravene the United Nations Charter and other international legal policies. Moreover, Ushakov said that both Moscow and Beijing sincerely believe that the existing state affairs and the issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program cannot be resolved militarily and called for a peaceful resolution to the war.
Meanwhile, reports state that without mentioning the U.S., Xi said that “major countries” possessing “special influence” in the Middle East ought to speed up diplomatic initiatives to calm the situation. Xi encouraged both countries, notably Israel, to stop attacking as soon as possible to “prevent a cycle of escalation” and avoid extending the confrontation. Additionally, Xi recommended efforts to protect civilians, pleading with both nations to support the evacuation of residents from other nations.
Israel carried out an unprecedented round of assaults on Iran a week ago, prompting Tehran to respond with missile and drone attacks. On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he was contemplating joining Israel’s strikes. Trump said that he “may or may not” engage.
While addressing reporters, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that they wish to advise Washington, specifically, against military action in the conflict. Zakharova went on to say that any military intervention by the United States would be a highly dangerous move with substantial, unforeseeable negative consequences.
Putin has, however, recently communicated with Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and has frequently stated that Russia is prepared to intervene between the two nations at war.
