(The Post News)– Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has officially received the go-ahead to upgrade its facilities to Formula One standards, bringing the dream of Africa’s return to the F1 calendar closer to reality. Toby Venter, who owns the historic track near Johannesburg, confirmed that the FIA has approved their Grade One design proposals, a vital step in securing a future Grand Prix.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Venter described the announcement as the beginning of a bold new era for the circuit. When he acquired Kyalami in 2014, his vision extended beyond restoration; he saw it becoming a hub for African motorsport. Now, with FIA’s endorsement, that vision is accelerating toward fruition.
The upgrades will not alter the circuit’s iconic 4.5 km layout but will focus on safety and compliance improvements. According to the British engineering firm overseeing the project, the changes are relatively minor and can be completed in just three months. These include extending run-off areas, reinforcing barrier systems, adding modern debris fencing, refining kerbs, and improving drainage.
Kyalami has also planned additional spectator zones and new grandstands, reinforcing its aim to become a world-class motorsport destination. Once upgrades are complete, Kyalami will be the only FIA Grade One certified track on the continent.
FIA has set a three-year deadline, but excitement is already building. With other locations like Cape Town, Rwanda, and Morocco also expressing interest in hosting Formula One, Africa’s return to the circuit may be sooner than expected.
