(The Post News)– The Eastern Cape government is committed to ongoing support for flood victims and recently observed a day of mourning in Mthatha to pay tribute to the flood victims. This solemn occasion allowed the community to come together and reflect on the devastating impact of the floods.
The floods have claimed at least 92 lives, with search operations still underway. The disaster has left over 4,300 people without homes, and many more are struggling to access basic necessities like food and clean water. The government is working tirelessly to address these needs and provide relief to those affected.
Eastern Cape Acting Premier Mlungisi Mvoko pledged at the memorial service that the government will work with local leaders to support flood victims until their lives return to normal. “We are promising that we will be with them until their lives improve or they get better from the disaster,” he said. This commitment has brought hope to many who have lost loved ones and livelihoods.
Mvoko also urged government officials to ensure that aid reaches the affected communities directly, without being diverted elsewhere. “We are also pleading with government officials to ensure that whatever is being contributed is meant for all the people that were hit by the disaster – [and it should] go to them. It does not go anywhere else,” he emphasized.
The government is determined to provide support and relief to those in need and to help the community rebuild and recover from this devastating disaster.
