(The Post News)- Many are left fearing for their lives in the midst of the rising gun violence in the vibrant City of Cape Town. Following a concerning number of people who were killed last week as a result of gun violence, Cape Town citizens are concerned about their safety, and police are calling for assistance to help solve these crimes.
Several cases pertaining to the escalating gun violence crimes in Cape Town have been recorded this week alone. According to reports, a number of deaths were recorded in areas such as Philippi East, Nyanga, Valhalla Park, and Lentegeur Park in Mitchell’s Plain, of which 3 were recorded in Lentegeur Park at a busy intersection, leaving community members alarmed.
The families of victims and residents of Cape Town express their worries as the situation becomes increasingly aggressive. “We are afraid here. I also just arrived recently as I’ve been staying with a friend because the gunmen have been seen around the area,” says a resident.
The family of a victim named Lungelwa is fearful and worried that her killers may return to cause harm to them as well. Lungelwa was one of the victims of the upsetting upsurge of gun violence. She passed away on Tuesday after a group of unknown gunmen invaded her home, where people were reported to have been drinking outside at the time.
“They held my mother in the kitchen and demanded money, and I couldn’t hear properly. They searched other people who were here and shot them in the legs if they refused to cooperate,” said a family member. The family member continued to describe the gruesome events at the scene, saying, “They went out, but one shooter returned and shot my mother.”
Activists are coming out, saying, “We cannot allow our communities to live in constant fear… the constitution says our people should be free of violence, and on the national development plan, it also says that by 2030, our people should feel safe, and they must be safe.”
Authorities have revealed that they suspect that all 3 murders were hit murders. “For now, we have not arrested any person in all three of them; we don’t see the possible link,” says SAPS. Investigations are still ongoing, and police are asking for anyone who can assist with information to come forward.
