(The Post News)- In a measured move reflecting increasing regional tensions, Britain on Friday withdrew its embassy personnel from Iran. The decision aligns with similar steps recently taken by several European nations, as well as Australia and New Zealand, amid the ongoing conflict involving Israel.
The UK Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that, “Due to the current security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw our UK staff from Iran.”
On the eighth day of the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, the UK Foreign Ministry reiterated its call for de-escalation. In a statement, it emphasized: “We take the protection of our staff and British nationals extremely seriously and we have long advised against all travel to Iran.”
The UK Foreign Office has announced that David Lammy will use his meetings in Geneva today to reiterate “the UK’s longstanding concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme” and to advocate for a diplomatic resolution.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has urged former US President Donald Trump to refrain from military action against Iran, responding to a series of aggressive posts made by Trump on his Truth Social platform.
Iranian media report that Israeli strikes have resulted in at least 639 deaths and over 1,300 injuries. In response, Israeli officials state that Iranian attacks have left 25 people dead and hundreds more hurt.
