A delegation led by Deputy Minister Thandi Mahambehlala visited flood-affected areas in the Eastern Cape, joined by officials from various government departments. The team included representatives from the Presidency, Home Affairs, and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
The delegation’s visit started in Butterworth and then moved to Mthatha, where they evaluated the ongoing relief efforts for the 92 people who had died in the floods. They assessed the progress made so far and identified areas that needed further support.
The Deputy Minister’s visit aimed to strengthen the government’s response to the floods and support those affected, according to Tsekiso Machike, spokesperson for the Human Settlements Minister. The government was committed to providing assistance to those in need and helping communities recover from the devastating impact of the floods.
Government officials from various departments, including Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Human Settlements Emergency Housing, and Health, had been working on the ground since the floods hit, providing assistance to affected communities. They had been providing essential services, including emergency housing, social grants, and healthcare support. The government’s efforts were focused on ensuring that those affected received the support they needed to rebuild their lives.
