(The Post News)- The ANC provincial convenor in KwaZulu-Natal, Jeff Radebe, has confirmed that the party had dissolved its 11 regions in KZN. The party decided to rebuild its leadership structures in the province earlier this year after losing support following the 2024 general elections.
The ANC’s support in the province dropped by 35 percentage points since 2019, costing them control of the province. The party saw a significant decline in support, from 54 in 2019 to 19 percent in 2024.
Radebe says the party has set up regional task teams in all 11 regions. He says these teams comprise dedicated and disciplined members who have shown loyalty to the party. Their role is to help stabilise and unify the party’s structures and restore a sense of purpose within the organisation and its broader alliance.
In February, the party took a major step towards rebuilding by appointing a 67-member provincial task team. Led by key figures including Jeff Radebe as convenor, Wesizwe Thusi and Sibusiso Duma as deputy convenors, Mike Mabuyakhulu as coordinator, Nomusa Dube Ncube as deputy coordinator, and Nomagugu Simelane as fundraiser, the team’s mandate was to revitalise the party ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
According to the ANC’s secretary general Fikile Mbalula, the appointed provincial task team were determined in rebuilding and strengthening the party in KZN. Mbalula further said he was confident of the task team. He added that the task team will serve as a temporary leadership structure to stabilise the organisation, promote political education, and revitalise ANC branches across the province.
The task team was also expected to work to rebuild relationships with traditional leaders, faith-based communities, and other social groups that have historically played a key role in the ANC’s development. By strengthening these partnerships, the ANC sought to foster unity, social cohesion, and transformation in society.
Meanwhile, KZN is not the only province which the ANC ought to rebuild but also Gauteng. On 26 February, Mbalula announced that Gauteng will also dissolve its leadership structures in the province. The party won 34 per cent of the votes in the 2024 general elections.
