(The Post News)– Cape Town’s disaster operations centre confirmed localised flooding, fallen trees, and windblown debris just hours after a strong cold front swept through the Western Cape on Wednesday.
Flooding was reported in several communities, including Vygieskraal, Parkwood, Bonnytoun, Gxagxa informal settlement, Lotus Park, Klipfontein Road/Barcelona, Phola Park, Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg, and Overcome Heights.
According to disaster risk management spokesperson Sonica Lategan, requests for flood relief kits from residents in areas such as Lwandle, Macassar, and Khayelitsha were earlier referred to the city’s informal settlements management division.
Lentegan indicated that significant flooding has affected several roads, and at least two canals have overflowed. The public is advised to stay away from flooded areas and waterways for their safety.
City traffic services spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said several road closures were in effect, adding that due to persistent rainfall, driving conditions were “incredibly difficult”.
