Multichoice Considers Separate Package for Supersport
(The Post News)- In the midst of financial challenges, changes may be on the horizon for Multichoice as the company is exploring plans to offer SuperSport as a separate package, without needing a full DSTV subscription. This deliberation follows challenges involving its subscribers. The company was reported to have lost at least R1.7 billion in revenue over the past two years as a result of losing about 2.8 million subscribers. It remains with around 1 million subscribers.
For a while now, Supersport fans have taken to social media to express their frustration over the “high” cost of DSTV subscriptions, requesting a more affordable option to watch sports without having to pay for the full DSTV package.
Currently, to get access to Supersport, one has to obtain the DSTV Premium Package, which, at this moment, starts at about R949 per month, which seems to be too expensive for many South African households. Multichoice has acknowledged that households struggling financially contributed to their letting go of their DSTV Premium subscriptions. The CEO of Multichoice, Calvo Mawela, has mentioned that the company is making plans to explore additional packaging options.
“We have always reviewed our packages each year. Now we are speeding things up and looking at all the options”, said Mawela.
He further explain that the company is looking to explore what other broadcasters, such as Sky, have done in the past by offering entertainment, sports and basic channels in separate bundles.
The Multichoice Company has met challenges in other countries as well, such as Nigeria, where about 1.4 million subscribers were recorded to have left their subscriptions due to the repeated price hikes.
However, the company’s streaming service, namely Showmax, is thriving, but not enough to make up for the losses the company has endured through its challenges. Nevertheless, the parent company of SuperSport has admitted that its streaming service, Showmax, is costing a lot to run.
A decision on whether or not the SuperSport standalone Package will be viable will be known by March of 2026
