(The Post News)- Floyd Shivambu’s announcement of a consultation process for a new political party is met with online debates. Supporters and critics are clashing online as tribalism concerns emerge.
Former Mkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu sparked a heated debate after announcing the consultation process for a new party, Mayibuye iAfrika. He received mixed reactions from the public and political parties. Shivambu not only made the announcement about Mayibuye iAfrika but also criticized his former parties, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as well as the MKP. He labeled the EFF as a ‘cult’ and the ANC as “directionless,” prompting backlash from members and followers of these parties, some of whom took to social media to express their thoughts on Floyd and his consultation process.
Facebook reactions to Mayibuye iAfrika included:
- Olebogeng Opulence: “He will leave this party like he did with the EFF.”
- Koena Alfred Rakwena Maffodi: “A real cult is loading… 2025 is going to be a great year.”
- Aubrey Tshaka: “I am not into politics, but now I feel like my political party has arrived. I am going to start voting for Floyd.”
- Tikelani Lester: “You are quick to complain about others, but you struggle to answer simple questions. You took more than 5 minutes to incorrectly answer the first question. You are nothing but a megalomaniac and a time-wasting machine.”
Some followers raised concerns that the Mayibuye iAfrika party could be tribalistic.
Kennedy Khoza said: “This sounds tribalistic to me. If Mayibuye gets registered as a political party, then at least 300,000 Tsonga-speaking people and maybe 3,000 guys who left with him from the EFF to MKP will join and form part of this, and that’s all. They will become a Giyani-Malamulele regional political party, just like that of Benny Mayengani. Truth be told, Facebook can mislead you into thinking you have numbers, while in reality, it’s just excitement.”
Nenzeni Nduma, a Tsonga-speaking individual, responded: “I’m a Tsonga, and I don’t like this guy when it comes to politics, but as Tsonga people, I’m a witness that we suffered a lot when it comes to tribalism. Let’s give Floyd Shivambu a chance to prove us wrong for once.”
Speaking to IOL, Fikile Mbalula, ANC Secretary-General, responded to Shivambu’s remarks about the ANC, labeling Shivambu a “failed politician.” Mbalula said: “Floyd doesn’t have any record of giving direction to anything.”
In a now-deleted X post, Shivambu had posted the results of an X survey, which required people to vote for a new political party, being within existing parties, or doing nothing. The numbers showed:
- New Political Party: 32%
- Be within the parties: 21%
- Do nothing: 47%
The poll indicated that 10,124 people had voted. Shivambu indicated that their system crashed due to the high volume of people registering to be volunteers for the Mayibuye iAfrika consultation process.
“We are doing very well, Commanders, Comrades, MaAfrika, Fighters, and the People of South Africa. We are humbled by the first number that caused the system to reach its limit. We had not anticipated the massive response. This does not replace the work we are going to do on the ground. The new form is limitless, and we vow to contact all our volunteers when we visit provinces and regions. Mayibuye iAfrika!” he said.
Shivambu is expected to hold a press briefing on June 27, 2025, to announce the Mayibuye iAfrika consultation team.
