(The Post News)- A tragic mass shooting in the Kanana Informal Settlement, Gugulethu, claimed the lives of seven men at approximately 3:30 a.m. today. The incident has shocked the community as police continue to investigate.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile briefed the media, revealing that the victims were between 26 and 30 years old. He added that most of the victims were not residents of Gugulethu, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officers on patrol were alerted to the shooting around 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of seven men, all with fatal gunshot wounds.
According to a SAPS media statement, preliminary reports suggest the victims were socializing in the kitchen when unidentified attackers ambushed them. Three other men, who were asleep in different parts of the house at the time, escaped unharmed.
This morning, Lieutenant-General Patekile met with detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at the scene, urging a thorough investigation. He emphasized the importance of exploring every lead to uncover the truth behind the killings and to bring those responsible to justice.
Lieutenant-General Patekile reaffirmed that violent and firearm-related crimes remain a top priority for the Western Cape SAPS, assuring the public that no resources will be spared in pursuing justice for the victims and their families.
The community continues to grapple with the impact of this tragedy, while authorities work diligently to provide answers.
