Firefighters shot dead in the U.S.
Another incident of gun violence has been reported in the U.S., resulting in the death of two firefighters on duty. The two firefighters were shot dead in the state of Idaho while responding to a fire emergency. It has been reported that the firefighters were called to assist at approximately 1:21 PM and thereafter reported to have been unexpectedly shot at around 2 PM. Another individual also sustained injuries from the gun attack but is in a stable condition.
According to reports, the suspect is believed to have deliberately lit a fire at Canfield Mountain in the north of Coeur d’Alene, called firefighters, and started shooting at them in a total ambush on Sunday afternoon. The ambush lasted several hours.
The Sheriff of Kootenai County, Idaho, Bob Norris, reported that there were about 300 officers deployed to the scene, where they were handling an active fire in a 17,000 square foot containment area. Two helicopters with snipers on board were also deployed to the scene. In the officer’s update, he said that during the time law enforcement was deployed to the area, they “exchanged gunfire with the suspect.” He continued to say that “the attack was carried out with high-powered rifles” and that “the shooter showed no signs of wanting to surrender.”
Norris disclosed that the shooters seemed well-prepared, leaving authorities unsure of whether there were one, two, three, or four shooters during the gun battle. “We honed in on the cell phone, and we saw that there was a male who appeared to be deceased with a weapon nearby. So, we have, currently, one dead shooter,” he said. The sheriff added, explaining the events that took place following the shootout. He said that, amid the rapidly spreading fire, the body of the suspect had to be collected and transported to another area.
Authorities believe that the suspect was the only shooter at the mountain at the time of the shootout and assured community members that there is no threat to the community at this time.
